One month to go!

It's the Wolverine.  It's Marvel.  It's summer.  It opens with no other big releases.  Despicable Me 2 has been out for a couple of weeks.  Smells like a massive opening doesn't it?  I am not sure about classifying $53 million as a massive opening.  I thought it could have been a lot higher.  Read here to see what the experts say about The Wolverine's opening at Box Office Mojo.

What does this mean for the league?  Well it catapulted Ned to 3rd with two movies yet to release.  If you recall during the Winter season this past year, Ned sat in first the whole season 'til the end when Colleen denied the chance of winning in his rookie season.   This time around he is in a much better position.  Closing in on Jeff and John who have occupied the top two spots for at least the past month, Ned is knocking at the door.

Right now Kick Ass 2 could possibly determine the winner.  Did anyone predict that back in April?   As it stands, John is finished while Jeff and Ned have Planes yet to go.  Ned also has one other movie.  It was originally going to be 300: Rise of an Empire however that release has been pushed back to March of next year.   Wouldn't it be nice to have Despicable Me 2 as your alternate, right about now?
Stay tuned its all happening in the next couple of weeks!

No significant changes in The Others.  Until we see another Kevin Hart routine or any other major openings, this looks to be settled.  Coming out this week is another buddy cop movie staring Wahlberg and a sequel that could help Brett get back into the top 3.  In only select theaters, zombies are back in Cockneys vs. Zombies and what looks like a good sci-fi thriller, Europa Report.

To call upon or command ...

The Conjuring took the box office by storm knocking off Despicable Me 2.  It even received an A- rating from an Entertainment Weekly critic.  Although when I think of summer, horror is not the first thing to come to mind.  This is looking like the real deal.  Making over $40 million in its opening weekend, it faired much better than the other three that came out this past weekend.  On another not, once again no surprises or big openings from The Others.

Jeff and Jamie hold on to their perspective divisions.  However with no movies opening for either, their leads dwindled.  Just six weeks left and what could be the most influential movie is about to be released this week.  The Wolverine hits theaters with little or no competition.  With a big opening, Chuck will gain the lead and Ned could be back in the running.  Other openings of interest are Blue Jasmine and The To-Do List.

Week 11 is in the books ...

"I'm having a bad bad day.  It's about time that I get my way.  Steam blowing where ever I see", Despicable Me ... 2.  Narrowly edging out Grown Ups 2, Despicable Me 2 claims the top spot for the second straight week in the battle for 'The Number Two Sequels'.  (Next week Red 2 will enter the fray.)  Coming in at number 3 for the week was Pacific Rim.  I doubt this met the studio's expectations. But look at the bright, all the commercials (if you still watch commercials) will not be the same anymore!

Looking at the league, Jeff is still perched on top but with seven weeks left, some scenarios are starting to pop up.  Jamie still has his number one, but completely buried at the bottom.  If Planes does manage to pull out a 9 spot, it will certainly propel him out of the cellar. (Get it, there is a pun in there.  Need a hint, look at his picks).  Another possibility is Ned who still has The Wolverine left at number 4 along with 2 additional movies.  However, there could even now be a stronger considering to dethrone Jeff, Chuck.  With three movies left and only $200 million out of first.  Chuck has a pretty good chance!

As for The Others, Jamie still dominates thanks to the Kevin Hart pick.  Can this weeks releases change the game as much as Kevin Hart did?  Girl Most Likely has Wigg, Only God Forgives has Gosling and The Act of Killing is about death squads in Indonesia.  You never know.  A slew of blockbusters come out as well.  The Conjuring (The psychic has research two other houses, do I hear trilogy.), R.I.P.D. (or Men in Black 4), Red 2 (which one will they bump off this time.), and Turbo (If snails could dream.) hit the theaters on this hot scorching hot weekend!

A big holiday weekend ...

Despicable Me 2 was the big winner this past weekend raking in lots of money despite making $60 million on Wednesday and Thursday.  It wrecked havoc throughout the league sending Ned and Jenna to the bottom and put Brett and Beth in contention.  Finally, no other movie could top it, even The Lone Ranger.

As for the The Others, people flocked to the theaters to see Kevin Hart's act.  For those who don't know Kevin Hart. He is a comedian that has a big following.  How big you might ask?  Big enough to get his act shown in a theater big.  What does this mean for our league?  Well, one member picked this movie/act and it propelled him to first!  Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain managed to pull in $10 million propelling Jamie to the top.

Out this week is Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim.  I am telling you right now a battle between giant creatures and robots sound way cooler than a bunch of guys having a midlife crisis involving a fraternity.  Wait, is this Old School 2?  Any guesses on how they will do?  What about Dealin' With Idiots, Fruitvale, and V/H/S/2?  I don't know about you but there are some pretty good horror stories out there that involve waiting for the VCR to finish rewinding tapes.

Meaningless Victim #1: "Man, hurry up! Just rewind it already!"
Meaningless Victim #2: "Don't wait 'til the end, just stop it now! He's coming!"
Audience Member: "He's going to get you!"
Dumb Blond: "He's here!"
Audience Member: "Don't go in there!"
Meaningless Victim #2: "He's got a knife and he is going to kill us!"
All: "Awwwwwwwwwww..."

It could be scary ...

Jockeying for Position ...

We are have reached the midway point!  Half way done folks, it's time for the back side, down hill, back nine and any other cliche that you can think of place here, no here __________.  What have we seen in the first half?  Brett jumped out to an early lead with most of his top 5 picked in the month of May.  The league with more members are showing more variety with several lead changes this summer.   Surprising releases by The Great Gatsby, World War Z and The Heat thus far.  No real surprising bombs. The Internship and After Earth come to mind.  Although you have to wonder if M's days are numbered.  Finally, The Others have been consistent with one thing and that is low openings.

Looking at the league, this past weekend only Jeff had The Heat and that propelled him into first.  John follows closely while Brett just holds onto 3rd from Ned.   Colleen is still firmly fixed at the top of The Others.  If we don't see any more big releases coming out and that is just where she will stay.  As for the Blockbusters, The Lone Ranger and Despicable Me 2 hit the theaters which could mix the league up a bit.  As for The Others, The Way, Way Back and the Hammer of the Gods try to break the dry spell.
