Well, a month and
several snow falls later, the season wrap-up is finally here!
Congrats are in order for Colleen. After it looked like Ned was
going wire to wire with an early pick of 'Paranormal Activity 4',
(Yes 5 is coming out this fall) Colleen's Christmas splurge came up
big. In the end, Chuck managed to squeak into the number 2 spot.
For being a first-timer, Ned came up big, now what to do with January
next time.
Since we last spoke (or
I wrote), Entertainment Weekly has come up with some blurbs on movies
in their magazine. One that was particularly interesting was the
'Box Office Trends' of 2012. The top five trends were superheroes
are as mighty as ever, international box office is soaring (maybe
should include it in the scoring), March is the new July (maybe
should include that next year), politics isn't poison, and grown-ups
go to the movies to. With no real teenie-bopper movie franchise out
there right now, just maybe we won't have to put Twilight at the top
of the list.
Entertainment Weekly
also released some stats from last year. 'The Avengers' were the
top grossing movie followed by 'The Dark Knight Rises', 'The Hunger
Games', 'Skyfall', and 'The Hobbit'. Wait, 'The Hobbit' … didn't
that only get 1.5 stars? Must have been the 2 Oscar noms it
received. For our season, I kept track of the top Opening Weekends
of our movies which produced a lot of surprises. I bet back in
October when you were selecting your movies 'Mama' would be in the
top 10. How about that 'Life of Pi' and 'Cloud Atlas' would fail to
make the top 10. Something to think about, but it looks like horror
movies might be bankable again or is that just because it's January
and nothing else came out. Why doesn't it work for August?
Here are the end of the
year stats:
OVERALL
Colleen $3,530,911,017
Chuck $3,465,792,390
Ned $3,443,246,443
Jeff $3,378,654,113
Jamie $3,263,195,362
Faith $3,257,209,408
John $3,243,903,333
BLOCKBUSTER THE
REST
Colleen $3,497,731,108 Jamie $35,716,437
Chuck $3,430,574.980 Chuck $35,217,410
Ned $3,409,684,620 Ned $33,561,823
Jeff $3,352,124,570 Colleen $33,179,909
Faith $3,228,783,006 John $28,614,489
Jamie $3,227,478,925 Faith $28,426,402
John $3,215,288,844 Jeff $26,529,543
And because it's the
end of the year, here are more stats!
Sit back put your feet
up and think about what life would be like without multipliers. It
would look something like this ….
OVERALL W/O MULTIPLIERS
(total of all 20 movies)
Colleen $494,590,656
Ned $493,078,864
Jeff $490,217,829
Chuck $464,682,548
Jamie $463,927,096
John $457,586,794
Faith $427,040,078
As you can see above,
it was a very close race!
Another stat kept this
year was if the movie league was based off of screen average. This
would certainly make the little guy more important. Movies like
'Lincoln' have massive totals before their wide release.
SCREEN AVERAGE
Colleen $262,619
Jeff $247,934
Chuck $229,862
Ned $208,117
John $193,251
Faith $180,880
Jamie $166,897
Finally, if you noticed
on the blog a new tab appeared about half way through the season.
This kept track of the 10 ten opening weekend grosses. I wasn't
close were you?
