Defining The Rest ...

Just to clarify about The Rest category.  The amounts for these movies will change during the course of the season and so will the divisions.  All movies released into the theater are assigned an ‘Opening Weekend’ amount.  As you may have noticed, sometimes The Rest category figures can be quite low. (Not talking about the Chernobyl Diaries low.  We are talking four digits low.)  This happens because the movie only opens on 5 screens.

For those who have played in the past, this is where it gets frustrating.  Sometimes these movies expand the number of screens, stay pat with only showings on 5 screens or the worse disappear altogether.   I have expected the Blockbusters movie picks to be similar.  Where this game will be won and lost is on these picks.  (So I hope …)

Eventually, Boxofficemojo.com which keeps tabs on all this changes their ‘Opening Weekend’ amount to ‘Limited Opening’ (same as ‘Opening’) and ‘Wide Opening’.  I go with the higher of the two openings.  It’s not always the ‘Wide Opening’.  Case in point is My Week with Marilyn.  This movie managed to make $1.8 in its ‘Limited Opening’ but failed to make $600,000 in its ‘Wide Opening’.

Still confused?  Just look up My Week with Marilyn and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Boxofficemojo.com and you will see what I am talking about.  Yes, right now Colleen is running away with that division. I will continue to check each week to see if any of the others will move to a wide release.  After TBEMH $6.4 million wide release, we all need it now!
