It opens big ....

The story so far ...
For the first time in league history, the title of Blockbuster came down to the alternates.  Faith's 11th pick (1st alternate) was Dunkirk which beat out both Baywatch (Jamie & Jenna) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Kevin).  Second place came down to the 12th pick and the battle of the popular book series.  Who here wouldn't want to see a 'Epic Rap Battle' between Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  Who will win? You decide!

In the Multipliers, Jeff (me, lol) took home the crown.  It was reported that this was the lowest total summer box office in the past several and it showed.  With less movies to pick from and even fewer perceived blockbusters, quite a few movies were held throughout the league.  Franchises claim nine out of the top ten for openings.

Up next is the Holiday Season!  It could be another close race to the finish.  In the upcoming weeks, I will be sending out some information.  If summer is any indication of the future leagues, every pick will count.

Summer's winner & losers ...

The story so far ...
Entertainment Weekly (EW) was so nice to publish a list of movies from the summer that were either winners or losers.  They reported that non-franchise movies can have success such as Dunkirk, The Big Sick and Baby Driver.  Also, women lead and dominate casts can sell tickets such as Wonder Woman, Girls Trip, and The Beguiled.  Finally, some low budget movies made a big splash such as 47 Meters Down, Everything, Everything, and Lowriders.

However, where there are winners. There are usually losers.  EW goes on to report that we saw several fading franchises such as Despicable Me 3, Transformers Something, Cars 3 and Pirates 5.  All had diminishing returns from their prequels. Comedies were hit hard where Rough Night, Baywatch, Snatched, & The House did poorly at the box office.  On a side note, Girls Trip did quite well!

Famed directors also didn't do so well either.  Ridley Scott's new Alien adventure under preformed.  Guy Ritchie couldn't help out Arthur like Sherlock.  Star Wars fans may be worrying after seeing The Book of Henry. Colin Trevorrow is slated to direct Star Wars VIII.  Finally Luc Besson took a big leap of faith on Valerian and missed.

All said and done, the league this summer did a great job collectively picking the winners!

One month to go ...

The story so far ...
The Dark Tower struggles at the box office.  Condensing eight books into an hour and half movie might have been a little too brief.

Looking ahead both Annabelle and Nut Job 2 come out this week.  If they managed to average $47 million openings, Tawny will take the top spot.

Which emoji best describes the movie ...

The story so far ...
August is here which means the end is near.  Tawny has two movies left to open.  However they need to average over $46 million to claim the top prize.  They need to average in the $100s of millions if she is to take Multipliers from Jeff.

The Dark Tower opens this weekend.  Has anybody else made it through the almost 4000 page book series? One article wrote that there are 3,000,000 words written in the series.  This guy has!  However, I have some reservations about the movie seeing how it is only 95 minutes long.  Um yeah, they had to cut some. Tom Bombadil is not alone.

So, who is up for the Holiday Season?  The season doesn't start until mid to late October but was considering moving up the start time.  Any thoughts?  The downfall with the longer season is not knowing all openings in January.  The upside is more movies to pick from.  Let me know and we will move forward accordingly.
