The story so far ...
Entertainment Weekly (EW) was so nice to publish a list of movies from the summer that were either winners or losers. They reported that non-franchise movies can have success such as Dunkirk, The Big Sick and Baby Driver. Also, women lead and dominate casts can sell tickets such as Wonder Woman, Girls Trip, and The Beguiled. Finally, some low budget movies made a big splash such as 47 Meters Down, Everything, Everything, and Lowriders.
However, where there are winners. There are usually losers. EW goes on to report that we saw several fading franchises such as Despicable Me 3, Transformers Something, Cars 3 and Pirates 5. All had diminishing returns from their prequels. Comedies were hit hard where Rough Night, Baywatch, Snatched, & The House did poorly at the box office. On a side note, Girls Trip did quite well!
Famed directors also didn't do so well either. Ridley Scott's new Alien adventure under preformed. Guy Ritchie couldn't help out Arthur like Sherlock. Star Wars fans may be worrying after seeing The Book of Henry. Colin Trevorrow is slated to direct Star Wars VIII. Finally Luc Besson took a big leap of faith on Valerian and missed.
All said and done, the league this summer did a great job collectively picking the winners!
