People tuned into to The Hobbit ...

For the 2nd straight weekend, The Hobbit 2 has taken the top spot.  In what has been a weak holiday season, big openings are hard to find.  With Anchorman 2 failing to reach $30 million, the league may already be decided.  Looking back to last year, Ned had a firm hold until Christmas.  After Christmas, Colleen went surging to the top and never looked back.  This year it's been all Jenna up to this point.  Now as we stand on the doorstep of Christmas, will Christmas be her demise as well?  Down by only $10 million and an extra movie to boot, Chuck is easily within striking distance.  This victory is not yet decided.

On another note, Christmas is tomorrow!  It's also a week with lots of openings.  Could this finally be the weekend to shake the league up?  It's been pretty stagnant for weeks.  Opening are 47 Ronin, Believe, Grudge Match, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and The Wolf on Wall Street.  Go out and catch a flick or two, it looks to be cold in the midwest.

"They've taken the hobbits to Isengard!"

As 2013 draws to a close, lots of sites all across the web produce lists.  Although there are lists for just about everything, clicking on movie lists tends to become a habit.  Whether it is 'Best', 'Worst', or 'Upcoming', seeing who is #1 is a must.  One list in particular grab our attention this year. It's been around and very topical.  Forbes.com produces a 'Most Overpaid Actor' list.  Topping the list is Adam Sandler followed about Katherine Heigl and Reese Witherspoon.  It's scary but they are only returning around #3.50 on the dollar they earned, dang!  Usually you can pick them out based on whether their movies flop. Read further to see who made the 10.  Read it! Just Read it!

Looking at our league, Ned inches closer to Jenna with a cool $16 million from the Madea family Christmas.  Otherwise not much movement.  The widely owned Hobbit struggled in comparison to it's predecessor despite a much higher rating.  Yes I know of the changes but really, it's not bad.  Coming out this weekend is Anchorman 2 and thanks to Share Joys, there just might be some new fanyboys out there.  Also coming out is Walking With Dinosaurs which could shake up things.

Here comes the Hobbits

According to The Week, a social media magazine such as Newsweek or Times but in small doses but that is not important right now, released a list of the 10 worst-reviewed movies of 2013 on their website TheWeek.com.  Making the list were After Earth, A Haunted House, The Host, Grown Ups 2, The Big Wedding, Battle of the Year, Scary Movie 5, Movie 43, Paranoia, and Getaway.  Should I be proud that two can be checked off as seen and that none were a must see?  As the end of the year draws near all kinds of lists will be released.  Here is hoping that The Hobbit will get some just do.

Well the bottom three teams in the league all took a $5 million dollar step closer.  Sadly, they were probably expecting a bit more from Out of the Furnance.  Jenna is still on top, but will Christmas be her downfall?  Last year Ned was looking at a sweep until Christmas came early and often to Colleen.  Years ago Beth had a firm foot hold until that lead was compromised by Brett and all his $60 million dollar openings.  Coming out this week is The Hobbit and Tyler Perry's A Very Madea Christmas.

Still Catching Fire ...

The Hunger Games remained on topped with a solid $74 million dollar gross in just their second weekend.  I wonder if their is a prequel or even a sequel to the trilogy.  One thing is for sure, I bet the producers are just begging for more books.  Frozen expanded and with it greatly increased it's opening weekend earnings.  However, Homefront and Black Nativity failed to draw much of a crowd.

Thanksgiving caused quite the shake up in the league this past weekend.  Jenna remains on top with Ned following closely behind.  Jamie leaped up to 5th while John and Faith fell to last.  Looking back at the multiplier, was it wise to not use it? It did add another element to the game.  For the last two seasons, your picks determined your fate.  Even if you didn't pick the best movies, where they were placed could help you out due to the multiplier.  However this also caused a great disparity in the league.  For example, if you didn't pick the movie that made $180 at one or two, you found yourself trying to make up $200, $400 or even $600 million hole.  That is hard to do when movies are only opening at $60 or $50 million.

By not using the multiplier, the league is in fact closer from top to bottom.  Most teams will have picked the top 5 or 6 movies.  However, it will be those last four which will determine the outcome.  It's those last four picks that tend to make the same amount.  Hopefully, in theory, this will allow for some close races.  Plus the holiday season produces far fewer bigger opening releases.  Just food for thought.
