This past evening as I sat staring off into a ravine entering the totals from the latest weekend's box office receipts, I couldn't help but think about 'The Others'. This enigma of a division that is next to impossible to predict. You can say this is pretty much a crap shoot.
Let me run some numbers by you. There were 81 movies to select from back in April. This was compiled from two different sources. However, as I sit here after Labor Day, 17 of those didn't even make it to the theater when predicted (or never will). That means you really only had 64 to choose from but which ones? Further hurting your chances of scoring big, some were released simultaneously both in the theaters and on cable, doh Erased! On the other hand a total of 87 movies were released in that same time period that weren't even on the original list. Some of those made over a million during the first weekend.
So the numbers are not in your favor. How about just trying to predict? Can't go off of popular movie stars, Julianne Moore in The English Teacher and Adrien Brody in High School. What about popular topics? Um zombies, vampires, and civil war veterans were all extinguished this time around at the box office. Even movies that were hyped with big advertising budgets fell flat. Finally, festival movies that generated buzz from audiences and critics a like failed to come through.
So how do you predict the next Kevin Hart comedy routine that managed to pull in $10 million in its opening weekend? Or the movies such as Lincoln and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel that moved from limited to wide and raked in a bunch? My mind is completely perplexed just thinking about.
The failure rate is high with The Others and I believe this is its demised. Too many times expecting big and watching a $164 opening is just awful. (I would like to take the time now and thank the roughly 20 people who went to go see Hammer of the Gods.) I have decided to nix The Others for the next season. If you see a way to include them, please let me know and maybe they can make a come back for next summer!
Now time for the wrap up. After moving past Brett in June and holding off John, Chuck, and Ned in the subsequent months, Jeff has taken home the trophy. (quoting Nitro and I must, "The trophy's mine!") Colleen had a late run as well but the Man of Steel cost her dearly as well as the fans did not head to the theater for arguably the funniest movie of the summer, The World's End.
For The Others, it was Jamie all the way with Kevin Hart's comedic routine Let Me Explain. It almost won by itself! Several movies were moved to wide release in the late summer months which caused a shake up in the league, but Jamie held strong.
