Just one more week ...

August takes hold and as kids prepare to head back to school, going to the movies they are not.  If you need proof who drives the box office, just look at the ticket sales.  Another theory which has been mentioned before on this very blog is people are out of money.  Maybe the choices aren't the best, there has been good reviews for The World's End and Mortal Instruments: City of Bones have been positive.  What started out as big weekend's in June have turned quite dismal for August.

What does this mean for our league?  Jeff which captured first in July has watched each competitor Brett, John, Ned and Chuck slip away out of contention.    It was just a couple of weeks ago that Ned was sitting pretty with three movies to Jeff's one with the multiplier potentially playing a part.  Sadly, they all fell flat on their face and Ned barely made any ground.

Enjoy this final weekend, it's Labor Day weekend!  If history repeats itself, not many will attend.  Need recommendations, The World's End if you missed it last weekend.  Coming out this weekend is Closed Circuit, Getaway and One Direction: This Is Us. Now you see the reason for my recommendation.  Have a great holiday weekend!

Another dud .............

Kick-Ass 2 lacks punch!  Paranoia has been cured! Jobs' luck runs out at the box office!  So what does this mean?  Chuck needs a big miracle with Mortal Instruments.  Can a teen fiction novel do for the box office what Harry Potter and Twilight did?  It's going to be tough.  August has not been kind to any movie this August.  A heat wave is passing through the midwest which could help!

Coming out this week along with Mortal Instruments is This is the End and You're Next.  This could be a good weekend for movie choices but not sure if that is going to equate to box office dollars.  Just 2 weeks left.  Really only 1 because not sure a One Direction concert is going to bring a whole, that and nobody picked it.

Spiraling down ...

Elysium takes first in the battle of 4 movies, but makes under $30 million for the weekend.  We're the Millers came in second followed by Planes and Percy Jackson.  August typically brings low box office receipts and this year is no different.  Not even Pixar with a Cars spinoff could break the spell.  Ned's surging to the top might have come to an end with Planes low opening of $22 million.   Now he needs a big showing from Kick-Ass 2 this weekend to claim the title.

Besides Kick-Ass 2, also opening this weekend is a movie about Steve Jobs, corporate espionage, and the White House butler.  Can Kick Ass well kick ass?  Will Apple come up with the cool product once again?  Can corporate espionage steal it?  Well they all get served by the butler?  Okay I will stop there.

Stagnant ....

It was a slow week in the movie business.  Make that a sloooow week.  With the box office topping off around $123 hundred million dollars, it was easily the lowest since April.  2 Guns topped off at $27 million while The Smurfs 2 made only $17 million.  Have movie goers run out of money?  Has the selection taken a nose dive?  Oh wait, we have entered August.

For The Others, Spectacular Now failed to make $200,000 in it's opening weekend.  However, its screen average was almost $50,000.  This could mean a wide release.  Better happen quick with the season almost over.  Predicting which movies will go to wide release in The Others category usually determines the winner.

Coming out this week is a whole slew of movies. First and foremost is Planes.  Ned's recent climb to the top could culminate this week if it does well.  If not, Ned will get another chance next week.
However, Planes will not be alone like The Wolverine.  It will be going up against Matt Damon's Elysium, the next installment of Percy Jackson and We're the Millers.  The last one looks particular funny!
