In which was the lowest grossing weekend for the box office since April,
The Purge came out on top making a health $34 million for it's opening. This could even be good enough to finish in the top 10 for the summer. Sadly
The Internship was not able to take advantage of the off weekend and only managed to scrounge up enough for $17 million. As for the smaller openings, they continue to be dismal. Joss Whedon's foray into
Shakespeare managed to make $178,000 while
Dirty Wars and
Wish You Were Here made next to nothing.
Nobody picked The Purge or The Internship so there was no movement in the league. This will change with the opening of
Man of Steel coming out on Friday. Although held by all in the league, there is a difference of opinion on how well it will do. Just maybe Christopher Nolan can bring box office success to Superman or not. Also coming out is
This is the End, however it wasn't picked. Finally a whole slew of smaller films are being released. Since they haven't been doing well, one might say these won't either.
