New Leader ...

The long trip is at an end.  Lots was seen, travel was far and fun had by all.   Although this was my third trip to Colorado in the past year, it never fails to disappoint.  I keep thinking that there will be a repeat but yet again, this trip was entirely new.  Not sure I can keep up the pace of going twice a year, but if I do ... something will need to be done about Nebraska and Iowa, lol.

Folks continue to flock to the theaters this summer which brings smiles all around.  I like the movie houses and really don't want to see them go.  New technology and other forms of entertainment continue to threaten their existence.  Now, a new pricing system where you pay based off the budget sounds horrendous has been proposed recently.  However as I ponder what will be my next viewing, happiness fills me knowing that there is a place still to see it.  Inspired, who is up for a movie?

People came out in masses this past weekend supporting those very such movie houses.  In fact this past weekend was the second highest on record for the summer.  Only a weekend with the debut of Iron Man was able to draw more.  However, maybe it is the wide variety which has enticed movie patrons from all over to be drawn to the theater.

What did this mean for our league?  A new leader has emerged!  Brett was dethroned this past weekend (but for how long).  John has taken over the top spot with the success of Monsters University and World War Z (but for how long).  Ned continues to climb entering the top five for the first time this season (but for how long).  Colleen continues to perch on top of The Others just in front of Jeff.

Out this week is The Heat and White House Down.  Two movies that could be perceived to be built around marketing as oppose to story.  Here is hoping it's the latter.  Also coming out is Copperhead, a movie about the Civil War and one in which I will be sure to see.  Finally, The Secret Disco Revolution hits theaters.  I told you Disco was still alive.

Superman ...

Please click on the following link to have playing as you read the blog. I realize that it may be a little over the top and definitely archaic since you have to have 2 (count them 2) windows open while reading. SONG!

If you predicted Man of Steel to do well, nice job! Superman still gots it making over $116 million this past weekend. Coming in at a not-so-close second was This Is the End. Fukrey was the top The Others movie, sadly it wasn't on the original list. This is the second straight week that has happened. Speaking of The Others, making money is going to be hard this year. We are now in the middle of June and still waiting for our first big score.

Around the league, Jeff jumps from 4th to 2nd and Jenna from 7th to 3rd. Brett is holding on but the lead is dwindling. At the other end of the league, the cartoons are not working out so well for Jamie while Colleen's pick of Superman last could be costly as we are reaching the halfway point. Colleen is still firmly perched on top of The Others. However, with no big scores, everybody is still in the hunt!
Coming out this week is Monsters University and World War Z.

Looking at the stats below you might notice some new columns. Besides the names of the members and their totals, previous week's rank and the amount of movies recorded have been added. A future column could include how much you are behind. Feel free to leave a post if you think any other columns should be added.

Stagnant ....

In which was the lowest grossing weekend for the box office since April, The Purge came out on top making a health $34 million for it's opening.  This could even be good enough to finish in the top 10 for the summer.  Sadly The Internship was not able to take advantage of the off weekend and only managed to scrounge up enough for $17 million.  As for the smaller openings, they continue to be dismal.  Joss Whedon's foray into Shakespeare managed to make $178,000 while Dirty Wars and Wish You Were Here made next to nothing.

Nobody picked The Purge or The Internship so there was no movement in the league.  This will change with the opening of Man of Steel coming out on Friday.  Although held by all in the league, there is a difference of opinion on how well it will do.  Just maybe Christopher Nolan can bring box office success to Superman or not.  Also coming out is This is the End, however it wasn't picked.  Finally a whole slew of smaller films are being released.  Since they haven't been doing well, one might say these won't either.

Fast & Furious races on

The box office continues to feel fast and furious.  Now You See Me and After Earth, despite this being one of M. Night Shyamalan better movies, were unable to unseat Fast & Furious as it leads the way for a second straight week.  Up next coming to a theater near you is The Internship and The Purge.  Of course you probably already knew this since the trailers have been plastered all over the tele recently.  I don't know about you, but F&F might make it a third week in a row.

Brett and Colleen continue to lead the way in their perspective divisions.  With AE and NYSM not quite reaching the $30 mil mark this past weekend there wasn't much movement in the Blockbusters.  However with The East managing to pull in $77, 000 Shadow Dancer making quite a bit less at $10,000, there was even less movement.  Colleen's $488,000 could be all that is needed to win.
